The Lamp of Liberty -- A Light for all the World

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive... those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

C. S. LEWIS (1898-1963).

In a free society the state does not administer the affairs of men. It administers justice among men who conduct their own affairs.

Lady Liberty Speaks
about
Tyranny & Free Societies

You stand now as at the wye of time: Your mind feels the two alternatives before you; you may trade your respect and your freedom for a short-lived security and sell your children to the aristocracy, or you may work and strive for liberty with honor. In your heart you know the right, while the comforts of government welfare and the narcotic of a lazy morality woo you to carelessness in the choice.

How long will you halt between? How high must the cost of freedom ascend ere you appreciate its worth and determine to pay its price? Can you not perceive that we once made the self-same error? Must each generation stumble in the same road? Must the cycles of history ever turn full round?

Nay, my children! Not so! This time you may break the ancient pattern... the seeds of liberty germinate quickly under the tyrant´s heel, and the embers of freedom glow brightest in the dark winds of oppression. Now those seeds grow and those embers glow, and the people of the earth peer out of darkness and look for your light! ....my Sons of Liberty--be true to it! The Lamp of Liberty -- A Light for all the World

Good intentions will always be pleaded for any assumption of power. The Constitution was made to guard people against the dangers of good intentions.

There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters.

DANIEL WEBSTER (1782-1852).

  1. We provide educational materials (below) to each member of congress and to every active congressional candidate.
  2. We follow-up with each of them to be certain that they support the principles taught in these freedom-fundamentals.
  3. If an existing member of congress doesn't support these principles, we actively promote a candidate who does.

Bastiat: On Life, Liberty, and Property

Your principle has placed these words above the entrance of the legislative chamber: "Whosoever acquires any influence here can obtain his share of legal plunder."

And what has been the result? All classes have flung themselves upon the doors of the chamber, crying: "A share of the plunder for me, for me!"

After the February Revolution, when universal suffrage was proclaimed, I hoped for a moment that its great voice would be heard saying: "No more plunder for anyone. Justice for everyone." For this is the true solution of the social problem. But that is not the way things happened; protectionist propaganda for centuries had too deeply corrupted men's feelings and ideas.

No; invoking your principle, every class came bursting into the National Assembly to make of the law an instrument of plunder. People demanded a progressive income tax, interest- free credit, the right to employment, the right to relief, guaranteed interest, a minimum wage, education free of charge, capital advances to industry, etc., etc. In short, everyone wanted to live and to develop at the expense of others.

Hazlitt: Economics In One Lesson

In brief, the main problem we face today is not economic, but political. Sound economists are in substantial agreement concerning what ought to be done. Practically all government attempts to redistribute wealth and income tend to smother productive incentives and lead toward general impoverishment. It is the proper sphere of government to create and enforce a framework of law that prohibits force and fraud. But it must refrain from specific economic interventions....

When Alexander the Great visited the philosopher Diogenes and asked whether he could do anything for him, Diogenes is said to have replied: 'Yes, stand a little less between me and the sun." It is what every citizen is entitled to ask of his government.
